Precision Arborist Care in Historic Bessemer City, NC

Situated in western Gaston County in the scenic shadow of Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain, Bessemer City is a historic foothill community rooted in 19th-century iron mining, lithium extraction, and textile manufacturing. Extending from downtown historic neighborhoods and mill villages like Osage and Smith toward rural acreage along NC-161, Edgewood Road, and Dallas-Bessemer City Highway, the town is framed by an extensive native tree canopy. Mature southern red oaks, white oaks, sweetgums, black walnuts, mockernut hickories, and loblolly pines shade family residences, line municipal streetscapes, and border rolling rural farmland.

RAM Tree Service LLC provides specialized arborist surgery, hazardous tree removals, and proactive canopy pruning directly to Bessemer City property owners. Led on-site by owner and lead climber Ron Martin with seasoned ground technician Buddy, our crew specializes in tight-quarter tree care, hazard reduction pruning, and rapid emergency storm clearing without rolling 40-ton commercial cranes over your lawn turf or cracking residential asphalt driveways. Operating as a verified North Carolina business entity (NC LLC #2158995), we ensure maximum property protection and pristine cleanup on every project.

Kings Mountain Belt Quartzite Geology, Cecil Clay Soils & Ridge Wind Shear

Bessemer City sits at an elevation of 900 feet in the western Piedmont foothills, drained by Long Creek and Beaverdam Creek. Geologically situated within the Kings Mountain Metamorphic Belt, the subsurface profile consists of quartz monzonite, amphibolite, and schist bedrocks, flanked by the dramatic quartzite monadnocks of Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain. Surface soils are predominantly Cecil sandy clay loam and Pacolet loam series, known for their dense red clay subsoils that exhibit low infiltration rates and slow internal drainage during sustained seasonal rainstorms.

Decades of past agricultural cotton farming and industrial mill development have compressed the upper soil horizon into an impermeable hardpan across Bessemer City properties. This dense crust inhibits deep downward root growth, forcing mature native hardwoods and tall pines to develop shallow, lateral root plates confined to the upper 12 to 16 inches of soil. Concurrently, the elevated quartzite ridges of Kings Mountain and Crowders Mountain deflect atmospheric pressure systems, generating turbulent downbursts and localized wind shear across surrounding foothill plains. When severe convective thunderstorms dump heavy rains, moisture perches atop the impermeable red clay subsoil, eliminating internal shear friction. High-velocity gusts striking broad tree crowns exert extreme rotational torque at the root collar, ripping shallow root plates loose from the slick mud. Our arborists carefully assess soil moisture conditions, root flare integrity, and terrain grade on every Bessemer City property before cutting.

Canopy Risks: Mill Village Oak Heart Rot, Brittle Virginia Pines & Included Bark

The urban and rural forest across Bessemer City faces intense weather stresses and biological decay. In older residential neighborhoods and historic textile mill villages, century-old willow oaks and water oaks often suffer from deep interior heartwood rot caused by Inonotus dryadeus and Polyporus fungi, which hollow out structural trunk wood from within while the outer canopy looks vibrant.

Furthermore, many mature hardwoods possess co-dominant trunks with included bark—tight V-shaped branch unions where bark is trapped between growing stems without structural wood bonding. These unbonded unions split vertically under high wind shear, dropping multi-ton limbs across homes, carports, and municipal streets. Additionally, extended summer drought periods followed by extreme heat trigger outbreaks of Southern pine bark beetles and Ips engraver beetles in local loblolly and Virginia pine stands, girdling the vascular cambium and leaving dead standing snags that rapidly become brittle and dangerous to remove. We carry out detailed canopy audits to identify fungal brackets, hollow trunks, and branch union defects before catastrophic failures occur.

Technical Climbing in Mill Village Parcels: Avoiding Utility & Yard Impact

Dismantling mature trees within Osage mill village setbacks and downtown residential alleys requires nimble arborist work rather than massive machinery. Bringing 40-ton boom cranes down narrow side streets risks tearing overhead service drops and crushing driveway aprons.

Ron Martin scales problem trees manually on climbing lines, establishing friction anchors high in the crown. Branch wood and trunk rounds are roped and eased down by Buddy using ground friction cylinders. Timber lands in compact target drop areas without impacting fences, porches, or neighboring structures. Ground protection mats safeguard turf from wheeled carts, and our self-propelled stump grinder chips out root flares 6 to 12 inches below grade.

Rapid 24/7 Storm Recovery Along NC-161 & the US-74 Foothill Track

Severe Piedmont squalls and mountain downbursts off Crowders Mountain regularly strike Bessemer City, snapping hollow oak limbs across roadways and toppling shallow-rooted pines across homes along NC-161, US-74, and Edgewood Road.

Our emergency tree response team provides 24/7 dispatch across Bessemer City. Arriving with commercial chainsaws, heavy recovery winches, and safety gear, we stabilize storm-damaged trees, relieve bound wood tension safely, and extract fallen trunks from roofs without structural puncture. Once timber is removed, we tarp exposed roof areas and supply full photo documentation for your insurance adjuster.

“Hazardous tree twisted over 103-year-old house after Hurricane Helene”

“We are extremely pleased with RAM Tree Service LLC. After Hurricane Helene, we had a very dangerous situation where a huge tree twisted at its base and partially fell over our 103 year old house in Montreat, NC., resting precariously in another tree. Due to the high slope, using bucket trucks and/or cranes was not an option. RAM Tree Service LLC was the only company who considered taking the job. Ron Martin climbed the tree and Buddy was on the ground. Using a system of pulleys and ropes, Ron and Buddy dismantled the tree without causing any damage to the house. In addition, they were professional, respectful, reliable, reasonable and communicated with us continually.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. Feedback means so much from our customers! It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and working with you on this hazardous project.”

“Tree climbing professional — no heavy equipment tearing up your yard”

“We called Ram Tree Service based on previous Google Reviews and we couldn't be happier! This company is the one that you want to use to have your trees trimmed or removed. Ron is a tree climbing professional - that means no heavy equipment tearing up your yard. He topped and dropped 5 trees on our property (and took down 3 more) - dropping each of them safely without damaging our fence line, house, or stone retaining wall. They chipped the tree limbs, cleaned up the yard, and left no sign that they had ever been on site. Highly recommended.”

“Large trees over 50 ft with 4-foot trunks safely roped and lowered”

“I HAVE had Ron take down two very large trees over 50 ft, on my rental properties in Charlotte in the last two years..these were huge trees, the last one tree trunk measured over 4 feet across...Ron does an excellent job and is very conscious about being careful of the property around the tree he is working on...He takes his time and uses his years of experience to carefully-"important word" carefully take down each limb which he ropes and lowers with the help of workers on the ground...I trust him and his people implicitly. He is very respectful and removes the debris from the tree and cleans up after all the tree removal...I would highly recommend Ron to anyone considering tree removal or tree trimming and pruning.”

“Emergency Cat Rescue 30+ feet up in a tall pine”

“Cat Rescue! We have a cat that we are temporarily fostering. She decided to climb 30 feet or more up a big pine tree. People kept telling us that we shouldn't worry she will come down on her own. After 4 days and some cold nights we realized that she was getting weak and had no intentions of coming down. So early on a Sunday morning I contacted RAM Tree service and asked if they could climb a tree to rescue the cat. They graciously agreed to help us out and were at my home in less than an hour. It was quite a sight watching him climb the ropes on a nearby tree and swinging over into the pine tree to rescue the cat. In an hour's time they had completed the task. They are an extremely nice couple who went above and beyond to help us out.”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you so much for the gracious review. We hope kitty is doing well and finds her forever home soon!”

Ron Martin (Owner Response):

“Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate your kind words!! People like you make it easy to do what we do!”
